A Review of American Idiot (Broadway)
By Rob Intile, June 15, 2010
I saw American Idiot (Broadway) on 05/13/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 5-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “It was really cool and entertaining.”
I had a exciting time and left the show feeling angry with our government and happy Bush is out of office. I'd describe the show as exilerating, flashy, and intersting. The set and light design was a highlight of the show because it was so intricate and almost a character itself. If this were a movie, I'd rate it R. I would recommend this show to liberals and those who like shows that are ALL music but not to children.
I saw this show because my boss gave me her Tony voter tickets. I would see it again. I sat in the center orchestra area of the theater. The view was a little too close and the seats were standard theatre seats...
I liked America Idiot. I really did. There are some scenes where the movement is really cool and fresh and even beautiful to watch. Michael Mayer's interpretation of the 2004 concept album is very true to Green Day's vision.
There is little book to the show, mainly being soliloquies from John Gallagher Jr. which can muddle the story line if one is not familiar with the music.
My one issue with this show is the political statement that it seems to be trying to make, but doesn't seem to get around to making by the close of the show. Though, this may be the point: "We have problems! But we don't really know what to do about them or how to fix them!"
