A Review of American Idiot (Broadway)
By David S., July 19, 2010
I saw American Idiot (Broadway) on 06/19/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 4-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Green Day fan or not, the theatrical adaptation of their music + the social subtext made this show!”
I had a great time and left the show feeling like a Green Day convert and I immediately tweeted about the show. I'd describe the show as energetic, driven, and relevant. The socio-political subtext was a highlight of the show because we are, like it or not, far too susceptible to the 24-hour news cycle. If this were a movie, I'd rate it R. I would recommend this show to anyone with an open mind but not to kids or Republicans.
I saw this show because of the reviews, and the amazing performance at the Tony Awards show. I would see it again. I sat in the right orchestra area of the theater. The view was clear and the seats were your typical theatre seats.
Watching three, so-called "normal" Americans try their best to resist the media-hype culture that IS America today, only to get sucked in and become a product of their surroundings despite their best efforts is the best way to capsulize the plot. The cast was simply amazing - their performance (driven, frenetic and crystal clear in the interpretation of the music) without an intermission was outstanding.
