A Review of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (Off Broadway)
By Joe B., May 05, 2010
I saw Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (Off Broadway) on 05/04/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 4-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “If you were to replace every occurrence "Indian" with "Jew" it'd be a Mel Brooks film on stage”
I had a good time and left the show feeling amused. I'd describe the show as funny, raunchy, and politically incorrect. Benjamin walker was a highlight of the show because he is a charismatic lead. If this were a movie, I'd rate it R. I would recommend this show to friends but not to native Americans.
I saw this show because it received critical praise. I would see it again. I sat in the center orchestra area of the theater. The view was distant and the seats were cramped.
This was among the best acted musicals I've seen. Stand-out performances were Benjamin Walker and Jeff Hiller. The script has its silly moments, but they are offset with poignant commentary on the contemporary political environment.
I'm a little disappointed in the singing. The music leans heavily toward hard rock/grunge/emo, but I thought that the best sung pieces were the more "theatrical", ballad-y ones. Although I really liked the cast, and I'd like to see it again with strong hard rock voices.
