A Review of Come Fly Away (Broadway)
By Andrew A., April 14, 2010
I saw Come Fly Away (Broadway) on 03/17/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 3-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Great dancing, not much else to it.”
I had a n OK time and left the show feeling wanting and a little disappointed. I'd describe the show as great dancers, doing good choreography, and only an OK show. The maitre'd was a highlight of the show because he danced and acted well. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG. I would recommend this show to adults but not to children.
I saw this show because I like dance. I wouldn't see it again. I sat in the center orchestra area of the theater. The view was good and the seats were fine.
I saw this show on matinee so I saw the second cast. Although I have no desire to see the show a second time, I do want to see the first cast do it because they are all great dancers and I am looking forward to seeing their performances. That said, the second cast is also very good and they do some brilliant dancing.
The thing that was lacking was a story and compelling characters. Having seen the dance piece this show is based on, "Nine Sinatra Songs" I'd say Twyla Tharp should have left it there and not bothered to try to extend the idea into an entire evening. She doesn't have enough material to keep us interested for that long and her story telling is weak.
The music balance was off for me as well, I wanted to hear Sinatra more up front. The band was excellent and the live singer was good too.
