A Review of Everyday Rapture (Broadway)
By Luis A., May 26, 2010
I saw Everyday Rapture (Broadway) on 05/26/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 5-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Sherrie Rene Scott has garnered herself a spot in the Broadway books! ”
It is time to go up the ladder to the roof and find yourself closer to Sherrie Rene Scott.
Everyday Rapture displaces you from the theater and takes you to a place where only you, Ms. Scott, and Judy Garland are found. The large scale of the American Airlines Theater becomes an intimate niche where Sherrie Rene Scott confides her life's biggest secrets as if she were only talking to you. Throughout the 90 minutes, 90 minutes you wish never end, Ms. Scott takes the audience on a journey that is filled with laughter and moments of complete vulnerability. If Ms.Scott is not making you laugh with her witty jokes and sometimes shocking exclamations, she is awing you with her amazing voice and not to mention her unexpected magic tricks. This is by far Sherrie Rene Scott's most valuable contribution to theatre, but much more grand than that, to New York theatre. Ms. Scott is most certainly going to be giving all the other leading ladies on Broadway a run for their money on Tony night.
Aside from Ms. Scott's performance, it is necessary to point out other aspects of this production that allow Everyday Rapture to be one of the freshest and most endearing show on Broadway. One of these points is in fact two. Ms. Scott's back up singers, called 'The Mennonettes', bring pure character and voice power to this little show that could. Song's like "Elevation" and "Up The Ladder To The Roof" shake one's soul thanks to these power houses. Along with these women, Ms. Scott introduces her audience to a character that is just that, a character. The character of a lip-syncing fan boy adds pure joy to the production. Another character of the show that plays an essential part in Everyday Rapture is the music. The music is the backbone of this production and never falters. Tom Kitt has created some fabulous arrangements that keep you on your toes and clenching your heart.
Overall, it can be simply stated that Everyday Rapture is a Broadway smash! Out of all the reasons to watch this superb piece of theatre, Sherrie Rene Scott's Tony recognized performance tops the list. It is imperative that all theatre lovers, and Judy fans, go to the American Airlines Theater and buy a ticket to this season's little show that could!
