A Review of In The Heights (Broadway)
By Julia B., October 09, 2010
I saw In The Heights (Broadway) on 08/27/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 5-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Modern hip-hop-ish music and engaging characters make this a fresh, crowd-pleasing show”
I had a fabulous time and left the show feeling energized and entertained. I'd describe the show as fun, fresh, and accessible. Lin manuel miranda's brilliant lyrics was a highlight of the show because they are witty and true to life. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG. I would recommend this show to everyone but not to people unwilling to accept hip hop as legitimate musical theater.
I saw this show because I had heard it was great. I would see it again. I sat in the right orchestra area of the theater. The view was clear and the seats were standard theater seats.
This is a really fun show - it is very accessible to all types of individuals. I've brought my friends to see it as well as my parents. The music has enough hip-hop flavor to be fun and edgy (by musical theater standards) for younger generations, but is still tame enough for older generations to enjoy.
The story provides a new twist on old themes of romance and family politics by setting the unfolding drama in the Latino neighborhood of Washington Heights. It touches on such current, relevant issues as racism, poverty, immigration, ethnic pride, and gentrification in an honest and matter-of-fact way, without becoming preachy or heavy-handed.
I have seen this production with multiple different casts, and each has been thoroughly enjoyable. Although Jordin Sparks' current incarnation of Nina leaves something to be desired as far as acting and chemistry go, she does have a wonderful voice. Olga Merediz is simply phenomenal as Abuela Claudia. The rest of the current cast is very strong, too, and the roles are written so charismatically that no matter what different vocal or acting style individual performers bring to the show, it is still a wonderful, entertaining production.
