A Review of Lysistrata Jones (Broadway)
By Sarah P., December 08, 2011
I saw Lysistrata Jones (Broadway) on 12/07/11. Overall, I'd say it was a 4-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “A cute, fun, silly romp from some of the creative team of 'Xanadu' and along similar lines.”
I had a enjoyable time and left the show feeling pumped up and amused. I'd describe the show as cheesy, witty, and sincere. The score was a highlight of the show because the tunes are catchy and well-written. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG-13. I would recommend this show to lovers of camp but not to kids or probably old people.
I saw this show because I was given comps. I would see it again. I sat in the left orchestra area of the theater. The view was decent and the seats were adequately comfortable.
Have seen this show three times now, and while it isn't brilliant by any stretch of the imagination, it is a good time, and far from boring! The cast is young, talented and spunky, and it's certainly a breath of fresh air...the pop cultural references manage to be mostly clever and funny and thus don't seem inappropriately shoehorned in and lame as in some modern shows. It does still feel like an off-Broadway show, and maybe shouldn't have come to Bway - I'm also not sure how long it's gonna last there - but I had a great time, every time! I was wary the first time, but it won me over by the end....surprisingly sweet little show.
