A Review of Memphis (Broadway)
By Cody D., July 19, 2010
I saw Memphis (Broadway) on 10/16/09. Overall, I'd say it was a 1-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Thanks to a bland score and cliche-ridden book, this was possibly the worst show I've ever seen.”
I had a dismal time and left the show feeling glad that it was over. I'd describe the show as boring, unfunny, and predictable. The ensemble was a highlight of the show because they were phenomenal dancers. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG-13.
I saw this show because I had heard that it was great. I sat in the right mezzanine area of the theater. The view was slightly obstructed from the overhang and the seats were fine.
I saw Memphis in previews and thought it was one of the worst show's I've ever seen. The music is bland and forgettable, the lyrics are silly, and the book is full of cliches and poorly-written dialogue. While they may be good singers, the show's two leads, Chad Kimball and Montego Glover, gave terrible performances, full of over-acting and bizarre character choices. The one highlight of the show was the choreography. The dancers executed the challenging choreography with graceful athleticism. The best number in the show, "Radio", works because it shows off the talented dancers and has very few lyrics.
