A Review of Memphis (Broadway)
By Anonymous, August 13, 2010
I saw Memphis (Broadway) on 10/24/09. Overall, I'd say it was a 2-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Dreamgirls + West Side Story + Hairspray = Memphis”
I had a terrible time and left the show feeling bored and annoyed. I'd describe the show as cliche, predictable, and boring. The dancing was a highlight of the show because it was well choreographed. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG-13.
I saw this show because I was given tickets. I wouldn't see it again. I sat in the center mezzanine area of the theater. The view was clear and the seats were fine.
I wasn't familiar with the show before I saw it, and had I known what it was about, I would have stayed away. It's so cliche, and the story has been done before, and better. The fact that this won Best Musical this year reflects the rough season for new musicals.
