I saw Memphis (Broadway) on 10/14/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 3-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “A polished show about fighting racism that is enjoyable but not life-changing”

I had a nice time and left the show feeling entertained and un-moved. I'd describe the show as colorful, music-filled, and somewhat predictable. The ensemble was a highlight of the show because the dancing and chorus numbers were impressive and energetic. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG-13. I would recommend this show to traditional Broadway goers but not to umm, racist people, I guess . . . .

I saw this show because I won tickets - thanks theater advisor!. I wouldn't see it again. I sat in the left orchestra area of the theater. The view was fine and the seats were also fine.

Memphis is a good show. It has a strong cast, the costumes are beautiful, and the book addresses timely themes of equal rights. However, for some reason it didn't move me as much as I thought it should. It seemed a bit too formulaic and self-aware of its moral high ground, and the main character made choices that are sometimes hard to empathize with. For me, one of the biggest problems, however, was the sound. You can tell the singers have powerful voices, but the sound system doesn't do them justice at all, and in fact the lyrics are often very difficult to understand. I think that takes away quite a bit from the impact of the production.

However, all that being said, it is a very nice and entertaining musical with some very colorful dance numbers and a collection of lovable secondary characters. It is a good show for anyone who wants the traditional Broadway musical experience, with the added perk of feeling good about yourself for having seen a show that addresses "real" issues even if it does so in a fairly unoriginal way.
