A Review of Next To Normal (Broadway)
By Mark B., August 15, 2010
I saw Next To Normal (Broadway) on 07/18/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 5-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Wow! What a brilliant production!”
I had a wonderful time and left the show feeling moved and blown away!. I'd describe the show as energetic, touching, and terrifying. Alice ripley's portayal of diane was a highlight of the show because she gives such a heart-breakingly beautiful performance. If this were a movie, I'd rate it R. I would recommend this show to anyone interested in seeing such an original piece of work but not to kids under 17 due to the storyline.
I saw this show because I wanted to see it again before Alice Ripley left the cast. I would see it again. I sat in the center orchestra area of the theater. The view was excellent and the seats were just fine.
As I said earlier, I wanted to see the show before Alice Ripley left the cast. This was my third time seeing it.
Each time I see it I have a completely different experience. For instance, I have seen three different actors play the role of Dan and this was the first time I walked away not hating his character. Brian D'Arcy James gave an incredible performance!
There is nothing I don't like about this show.
I am always amazed at the number of shows the cast must perform during any given week given the amount of emotion in the script and how "on" the actor's must be just to get through it. This especially goes to Alice Ripley, who gave one of the most incredible performances I have ever witnessed on a Broadway stage for this, her second to last performance.
Go see this show. Fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride!
