A Review of Race (Broadway)
By Mark T., May 13, 2010
I saw Race (Broadway) on 12/06/09. Overall, I'd say it was a 3-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Felt like Mamet light with decent performances but not a knock out production.”
I had a n enjoyable time and left the show feeling contemplative. I'd describe the show as interesting, compelling at times, and drama. David alan greer was a highlight of the show because he surprised me with his stage acting skills. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG-13. I would recommend this show to friends and colleagues but not to kids under 16.
I saw this show because was invited to the opening night. I wouldn't see it again. I sat in the left orchestra area of the theater. The view was good and the seats were fine.
While Mamet is one of our great playwrigh's, this felt a bit on the light side for him. Exploring a subject which has been explored many times in the theater and often in a more compelling manner. What this production has going for it is an excellent cast with several stars who are showing their stage acting skills.
I think that if the production had been directed by someone other than Mamet himself, we would have had a much more vibrant and compelling production. The staging was very conventional and took some of the drama out of the action.
