A Review of The Fantasticks (Off Broadway)
By Shae L., September 15, 2010
I saw The Fantasticks (Off Broadway) on 09/12/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 5-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “The intimate theater space only furthered the sense of awe & connection to the story & actors.”
I had a fabulous time and left the show feeling thrilled and blown away. I'd describe the show as intimate, well-performed, and enjoyable. The lack of microphone amplification was a highlight of the show because it allowed the actors to explore their vocal ranges both dynamically and emotionally. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG. I would recommend this show to everyone I know but not to those who are claustrophobic.
I saw this show because we wanted to experience an off-broadway musical. I would see it again. I sat in the center area of the theater. The view was clear as the theater is very small and the seats were comfy but tight.
At first, the size of the theater was admittedly alarming - it is very small. However, as the show began, immediately we were transformed from viewers to participants. The actors were all superb and engaging. The story was sweet and lighthearted. There wasn't much production of the show so the actors had the task of carrying the spectacle and transporting the audience to another world - and they did. The pianist and harpist were brilliant! It really was such a wonderful production! Bravo!
