A Review of The Lion King (Broadway)
By Sarah P., September 23, 2010
I saw The Lion King (Broadway) on 09/22/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 5-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Dazzling! I was amazed that Disney could pull this one off onstage, but it works on every level!”
I had a incredible time and left the show feeling awed and uplifted. I'd describe the show as visually stunning, moving, and epic. The amazing, intricate puppetry of julie taymor was a highlight of the show because it brought the flora and fauna of Africa to life. If this were a movie, I'd rate it G. I would recommend this show to anyone but not to someone uber-cynical who hates Disney, I suppose.
I saw this show because I received free tickets. I would see it again. I sat in the center orchestra area of the theater. The view was perfect and the seats were comfortable enough.
I knew this show had to be good, but I wasn't expecting it to actually be as phenomenal as it was...like many people, I found myself unexpectedly tearing up during "Circle of Life" both at the beginning and end! The masterful visual spectacle - costumes, sets, puppetry, choreography, skillful dancing, etc. - and the powerful music combined in such delightful ways. The entire cast was top-notch, especially Alton White as Mufasa, Gareth Saxe as Scar, the kids who played Young Simba and Young Nala, and Chauntee Schuler and Dashaun Young as adult Nala and Simba! (Especially Nala!) All in all I'm so glad I finally saw it, 13 years after it opened.
