A Review of The Merchant of Venice (Off Broadway)
By Linda B., June 23, 2010
I saw The Merchant of Venice (Off Broadway) on 06/12/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 5-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “A beautiful production for free--you can't really beat that.”
I had a wonderful time and left the show feeling relieved I was able to see it early in the run and happy that I live in New York. I'd describe the show as moving, thought-provoking, and a classic. The set was a highlight of the show because you'll just have to see it. I don't want to give anything away. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG. I would recommend this show to anyone but not to people who don't like outdoor theater.
I saw this show because I see all Shakespeare in the Park shows. I would see it again. I sat in the center orchestra area of the theater. The view was unbelievable and the seats were fine.
Shakespeare in the Park is one of my favorite things about summer in New York City. For the first time, Shakespeare in the Park is doing two Shakespeare plays in repertory, and I highly recommend seeing both of them. In this production Merchant of Venice, there is a wordless scene towards the end of the play that is worth waiting in line all day for.
