A Review of The Phantom of the Opera (Broadway)
By Pëtra D., April 14, 2010
I saw The Phantom of the Opera (Broadway) on 03/14/09. Overall, I'd say it was a 2-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “This relic should be retired”
I had a so-so time and left the show feeling unfulfilled and silly. I'd describe the show as over-acted, antiquated, and ridiculous. When the cheesy organ was playing was a highlight of the show because I couldn't stop laughing. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG. I would recommend this show to no one but not to everyone.
I saw this show because it is one of the shows everyone is supposed to see. I wouldn't see it again. I sat in the left balcony area of the theater. The view was good and the seats were comfortable.
As indicated by my rather (though not intentionally) scathing review, I didn't enjoy the show.
I have heard about Phantom pretty much my whole life. I grew up in love with the theater and set as my goal to be part of it (and now I am!). Phantom was one of those shows that was so good it stayed on Broadway for years and everyone had to see it.
Then I saw it.
The story is still there, the lyrics are there, the movement is there... but the soul is missing from this production. What was a masterpiece in the 1980s has disintegrated into a shadow of its former self and has become rather sad and comical instead of spectacular and moving.
The show needs an injection of energy or needs to finally retire from the Great White Way.
