A Review of War Horse (Broadway)
By Lynne C., April 27, 2011
I saw War Horse (Broadway) on 04/13/11. Overall, I'd say it was a 5-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “This is story of a boy gone to war to rescue his beloved horse, set in World War 1.”
I had a fabulous time and left the show feeling breathless and emotional. I'd describe the show as brilliant, touching, and thought provoking. The life size horse puppets was a highlight of the show because you quickly forget that they are puppets because they are so real in their movements. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG-13. I would recommend this show to everyone but not to children under 10.
I saw this show because I had heard it was wonderful. I would see it again. I sat in the center mezzanine area of the theater. The view was good and the seats were comfortable.
Warhorse is an amazing piece of theater that moved me to tears. It was not just about the relationship between a boy and his horse, it was also about what war does to people. The message was not heavy handed. The puppeteers were amazing, injecting life into the horses that breathed and moved like real horses. There was also a goose that was too cute for words. The infusion of music into the play, although this is NOT a musical, helped move the story along. Wonderful show!
